Myths and Misconceptions

This module will focus on getting to know bears. And are they really as terrifying as we are led to believe? 

B.E.A.R. - Bear Country Bears

The Bear Hierarchy of Needs, examines the physiological needs, the availability of food sources and the quality of the habitats they use and how they affect a bear’s tolerance to different situations.

B.E.A.R - Bear Encounter Dynamics

The Bear Hierarchy of Needs, examines the physiological needs, the availability of food sources and the quality of the habitats they use and how they affect a bear’s tolerance to different situations.

B.E.A.R - Assessing the Situation

This modules focus will be what to do if you have an unexpected bear encounter and to learn that the best way to stay safe is to prevent and avoid a bear encounter.  Sometimes, that isn’t possible, so you will learn some of the best strategies to use in the event of an encounter. You will learn what to do and to tell the difference between a non-defensive or a defensive bear if they approach you.

B.E.A.R. - Response Action Steps

This modules you’ll lean about what to do before you head out into “bear country” where to find more educational resources.  You’ll also learn how to reduce attractants around campsites and backyards. In this module we will also discuss different protocols for different recreational activities such as coming ashore in a kayak, cruising and safely photographing bears.

Bear Safety and Deterrents

You will learn what are problem bears and how to prevent this bad behaviour, the best practices for viewing wildlife if the opportunity arises, how to walk in the woods and the proper use, storage and first aid of the various bear deterrents that are available.
